A recent blog post on GetawayBlog gave some insight that most people will take their smartphones with them when they go camping. Call me old fashioned but I still believe that when it comes to going away on a camping trip that you don't need to use a phone to plan your trip or even to make the trip more enjoyable unless really necessary.

Camping Checklist:
I think both the brain and phone are equal here, yes on your phone there might be one or two things extra but stuff like "Malaria tablets" will not apply unless you are visiting one of the countries where it is present. So I would rather write down Braaispice than waiting for the phone to remind me of it, if it does.
Torch:
Okay here's the thing, the torch app that is installed on your phone might come in handy for looking around the tent but for walking in the dark towards the ablution facilities late at night while you still fast asleep, not so much.
Guidebooks:
This one I can agree on, gone are the days of carrying a 500 page book around on The Birds of Africa. There are free and paid Apps available on IOS and Android exactly for this purpose so if it is user friendly enough I say use it.
First Aid:
Yip when you are far away and don't know what to do and have someone nearby who can help the ST John Ambulance First Aid app could come in very handy, especially when symptoms and information is needed quickly.
Stargazing:
So you want to have a romantic evening with that someone special gazing at the stars, with your phone? No. Really I don't think that is the appropriate time to look for any star map at all.
But this is just my opinion, how i see it. :-)
